Premiers Crus Appellations
(village appellations followed by the climat name)
These are specifically delimited plots, called climats whose wines are traditionally considered superior to the wines of other climats within that village. The plot “Les Marconnets”, for instance, is situated in the Beaune appellation but listed Premiers Crus. In the Côte d’Or department, Beaune is the largest appellation area with 42 plots listed Premiers Crus.
On the label the legal product information must be « Appellation 1er cru contrôlée » followed by the village name (e.g.: « Appellation Beaune 1er Cru »). The name of the plot is not always mentioned.
Examples: Beaune Les Marconnets, Beaune Les Cents Vignes, Volnay-Caillerets, Pommard-Rugiens, Meursault-Perrières…
Grands Crus Appellations
Grands Crus wines are Burgundy finest wines and are produced on climats with a high reputation. A same Grand Cru appellation can be found in several villages, e.g. Corton Grand Cru is produced in the villages of Aloxe Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses.
On the label the legal product information must be « Grand cru ». Only red Grands Crus wines can be followed by the climat’s name, e.g. Corton Grand Cru –Les Bressandes.
Examples: Corton, Corton Charlemagne, Montrachet… La Romanée-Conti is certainly the most famous Grands Crus appellation. With an annual production of 5 980 bottles only a few wine lovers will get the chance to buy one of them.
